Mijn Klacht:

Dear Syntus,

I am very unhappy to report that during my today’s trip on the bus number one, going from central station of Enschede to UT/Langenkampweg, I was really feeling unsafe, terrified to be exact.

The whole situation started already at the central station, where two men got on the bus, as it appeared, one was just escorting the other one to get on the bus, and left a moment after, just asking the driver to take care of his brother. I could tell that it is going to be an unpleasant ride from the beginning as they were both very loud, shouting something to each other (I did not hear most of it as I put the volume up on my headphones and they were speaking Dutch, so I couldn’t understand exactly what they were shouting about), additionally, a strong scent of alcohol was hitting my nostrils. Already at this point, I do not understand why the driver did not ask the men out of the bus, as they did not even pay for the ride (they did not check in with the chipcard and they did not buy a ticket). We were still at the station so I believe, it would not be that hard to ask for some support in case, they did not leave willingly.

My nightmare continued from there. The man that stayed on the bus, sat right across me, putting his leg on the sit next to him, as it was injured. He never stopped mumbling something (rather shouting) and the scent of alcohol has become really unbearable.

From about half of the journey (I believe the last passenger got out in one of the stops before the winkelcentrum Twekklerweld), it was only me, the driver and this guy on the bus and when he decided to get off he was very agitated about something, talking aggressively to the driver, from what I understood, he was trying to get the driver to get back to previous stop or something, but again, in drunk Dutch, which I did not understand. After he finally got out, the driver seemed also very agitated, as he rushed till the end of the route and was driving very fast through the campus, which, in my humble opinion, was very dangerous.

In this whole situation, I was really terrified that this guy will pick up a real fight any moment. It really made me wonder, if it was really necessary to make my heart pound for good 20 minutes? Wouldn’t it be easier to just get rid of this guy at the very beginning, as he was drunk, did not purchase a ticket and was extremely loud and, in my opinion, agressive? I leave that for you to answer.

Kind regards,

Liwia Rzewska.

PS. To make it exact, which bus it was: bus 1, going from Enschede central station to Enschede-UT/Langenkapweg, Leaving the station at 18:50 on December the 5th, 2017 and arriving to UT/Langenkapweg at 19:10, but due to the described situation, it was late.

Gewenste Oplossing:

I would be certainly satisfied, if I was guaranteed a safe ride, for which I believe I pay more than enough. That would mean, not letting shady, drunk people into the bus or getting them off the bus when they behave like the man described above. The fact that the driver did not ask the man to get out of the bus was simply scandalous to me and the aggressive driving style following the events, just made a cherry on the top of the pie of disaster. I understand that the driver was angry and late but it does not justify going very fast through the campus, especially in the darkness, at the time that many students are around. Therefore, I would like the drivers to drive reasonable, and in the manner that I do not have to hold on to anything around me to not end up falling off the seat. I truly felt like the driver thought he was transporting a bag of potatoes, not a human being.
